About the foundation

Foundation Mixtecos Unidos (FMU) is a volunteer-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit with two homes: North San Diego County, California, and Tezoatlán, Oaxaca, Mexico. We preserve the Mixteco people and culture while creating educational and economic opportunities for self-sufficiency: fair-wage artisan work, a School of Music, and language classes in Oaxaca, and youth and community programs here at home.

The Mixteco are one of Mexico’s oldest indigenous peoples, with their own language and dialects that can change from town to town. In the highlands around Tezoatlán, many families live without electricity, plumbing, or reliable income, but they carry a generational gift: palm weaving. Our work turns that skill into a living.

In Oaxaca, we work in and around Tezoatlán with our collective of Mixteco artesanos and the children in our School of Music and language classes. At home, we serve North San Diego County, supporting local youth programs, school teams, families in crisis, and the many cultures of our community.

Into the work: fair wages for artesanos, instruments and teachers for the School of Music, language classes, and youth programs in North County. We are volunteer-led and low-overhead. Nobody here draws a salary from your gift.

The baskets

Mostly in person, at pop-ups, markets, and community events around San Diego County. Join the list on the baskets page and we’ll email you the next place to buy.

Because every single one is handmade and one-of-a-kind. The exact basket in a photo would never be the one that arrives. So we sell them in person, where you can pick the one that’s yours. (For gifts, you can donate and receive a surprise piece as our thanks.)

Every $10 you spend represents about one day’s fair wages for the Mixteco artesano who wove it. We sell at cost. The money goes back to the maker, not to us. It’s income with dignity, built on a craft passed down for generations.

Getting involved

In the words of our founders: your time, ideas, books, or old instruments. Every bit helps. Gently used band instruments give a child a seat in our School of Music; volunteers make our pop-ups and events run. Reach out here.

Join “The Dispatch from Tezoatlán”: one honest email a month with photos, a story from the work, and a plain accounting of what your support paid for. No spam, no guilt. Sign up at the bottom of our homepage.
